Ayomide Tayo, The Quiet Revolution in Nigerian Music

Ayomide Tayo, The Quiet Revolution in Nigerian Music

In Nigeria’s music scene – it is the rhythm that gives it life; and in that rhythm is a silent leader named AOT2, whose real name is Ayomide Tayo, a hero who has over the years built the scene’s foundations, directed its course and embodied its essence while many creatives bask in the spotlight.

For about a decade, Tayo has dedicatedly documented the growth and raw talents of Nigerian music from its beginning to date.  His journey began as an Intern at Zmirage Multimedia Limited, where he gained his initial experience in the industry. He then spent two years as a music journalist at Hip Hop World Magazine, a media organization associated with dynamic Nigerian youth, further honing his skills.

Tayo’s dedication to the music industry continued as he became Senior Content Editor at Opera News, where he spent three years and a month, further expanding his reach and influence. His impressive career trajectory led him to The Plug Entertainment, where he served as Head of Copy, demonstrating his leadership and expertise in content creation.

Tayo’s love for music was never just about reporting. He sought to take the discussion to the next level as well as challenge the existing music review norms in Nigeria. He established Pop Off Central, a popular blog that acted as a major credible site for informative reviews and reflections within a short span. He did not shy away from criticizing things; thus, he set standards for Nigerian music album reviews while ensuring that artists were held accountable.

His influence extends beyond the written words and not limited to the pen alone. Tayo was instrumental in launching and developing Hip TV, a game-changer in the Nigerian music television industry.  He was also part of the team that brought Nigeria’s prestigious Headies Awards to life, ensuring world recognition of the nation’s musical talents.

Tayo was able to use his voice to make Pulse Nigeria; the top-notch provider of news that it is today thanks to his unique insights shared through interviews and write-ups. As a matter of fact, he even took an in-depth look at the history of Nigerian music by co-hosting “Loose Talk” Podcast, whose critical acclaim has made it an avenue for tracing the growth of music in the country by going back to its roots.

Tayo’s commitment goes beyond the digital world. He has worked with several brands like Project Fame, BHM, SoundCity, and Monster Energy Drink, among others. He still supports Nigerian pop culture even now, via his Naija Times newsletter which is a proof of his dedication for the industry.

Currently, Ayomide Tayo serves as the operational specialist at Phoenix Nigeria, bringing his extensive experience and knowledge to a new role within the industry.

In the limelight of many artists and musicians, where many artists and musicians take lead, Ayomide Tayo stands silent at the back as the unsung hero for the Nigerian music genre. He is the one who crafts  together the story-lines and amplifies other people’s voices while making sure that this sector pulsates strongly. This is evidence enough of how much can be achieved with passion and persistence.

Before you ask yourself; “why then don’t I know him?” Remember, Not all heroes wear capes (or make noise), rather they do some good things quietly like shaping history.
