Unspoken Rules: A Nigerian’s Guide to Surviving Outside

Unspoken Rules: A Nigerian’s Guide to Surviving Outside

Hello, dear reader. Buckle up for another mind-blowing, value-packed article that’ll have you nodding and chuckling (but not too much, as you’ll soon find out).

Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on the unspoken rules every Nigerian should follow when venturing outside. Whether you’re a Lagos hustler or an Abuja smooth operator, this guide is your ticket to street-smart success. So, grab your shades (but don’t smile), and let’s dive into the urban wisdom you never knew you needed.

(1)Don’t smile:

There’s absolutely nothing funny out there, so why are you smiling? Here are two solid reasons to keep that grin in check:

(a) For safety: Excessive smiling might be harmful in certain parts of the streets. It could encourage street urchins to “tax” you, so maintain that poker face for your safety.

(b)Steeze: Imagine wearing shades and smiling — it’ll ruin your steeze like mad. Keep it cool, keep it collected.

(2) Fear Police:

If you value your peace of mind, anytime you’re stopped by men in uniform and they offer to search you, just empty your pockets yourself. I will say no more. (You get the gist, right?)

(3) Hold extra change:

It’s a normal unspoken rule to always go out with extra money, but it’s more essential now than ever. Inflation, fuel scarcity, and everything that leads to price hikes have lost all shame.

That transport fare that was ₦1,000 in the morning can skyrocket to ₦3,500 by afternoon. So, if you like, allow yourself to be caught off guard. (But don’t say I didn’t warn you)

(4)You are not a prince:

Here’s another rule to help you survive when you’re in the streets. If you hear them call you “Omo Oba” (which means “Prince”), just increase your walking pace and zoom off. Trust me, it’s for your good.

(5) Use deodorants:

We’re going through a lot in this country; please don’t add to our problems. Keep it fresh, people.

(6) Avoid Egbon Adugbo:

There you have it — your survival guide to navigating the streets of Nigeria. Remember, these unspoken rules aren’t just about survival; they’re about thriving in our unique urban jungle. Stay safe out there.

Now, it’s your turn to share the street-smart wisdom. Drop your own unspoken rules in the comments below. Have you experienced any of these situations?
