FRIENDSHIP BREAKUPS: Signs That Your Friend Is About to Breakup With You

Friendship breakups hurt.

Unlike romantic relationships, we don’t often anticipate that friendships will end. When they do, it can feel like a total shock. It’s a unique pain, sometimes even worse than the end of a romantic relationship.

Unlike romantic relationships, friendship breakups rarely come with warning signs we know to watch for.
These endings can cut deeper than any romantic split, leaving us questioning years of shared memories and inside jokes. The hardest part? There’s often no closure, no final conversation to explain what went wrong.

While we can’t prevent every friendship from ending, we can learn to recognize the signs that a friendship might be fading. Here are the key signals that your friend might be pulling away…

(1) They Air you:

Once you notice your best friend who would never miss your call or a Reel from IG begins to do so, you should start getting ready to find another one.

A breakup is imminent because they would soon ghost you.

(2) No Hyping:

That’s probably how they look at your picture on Instagram or your status without saying anything, not even a small fire emoji to gas you up like they used to.

(3) Judgemental:

All of a sudden, your best friend has morals and is calling you out for spending your last 2k on Turkey, instead of gingering you to spend it because “money na water”.

A good bestie should support all your decisions, even the bad ones.

(4) Inside jokes:

The beginning of the end, this means they are already making memories with others behind your back. They’ve demoted you to side chick.

(5) Secrets:

When you notice that it’s time to spill some tea, you are the only one dropping gist, and they keep giving you crumbs or saying “Nothing is happening”, or “I can’t tell you,” that’s a sign that your friendship is fading.

(6) Slying:

If your friend starts going out with other people without you, that’s an obvious sign that they’ve moved on from the friendship. Don’t be too upset, though; you’ll find another bestie

(7) They make jokes about cutting you off:

O TI LO

Friendship breakups are a natural, though often overlooked, part of personal growth and life transitions. While these endings can be deeply painful and disorienting, they don’t invalidate the genuine connections and meaningful moments shared during the friendship.

Understanding that friendships can end without either person being “at fault” helps us process these losses more healthfully. Rather than viewing these endings as failures, we can see them as chapters closing in our ongoing story of personal evolution, even when the conclusion feels unfinished.

By recognizing the signs of a fading friendship early on, we can either work to address issues or prepare ourselves emotionally for the transition, leading to better emotional well-being and personal growth.
