INTRODUCING: Akachi Igboko

In the ever-evolving world of Nigerian music, few have successfully transitioned from artist to executive. Akachi Igboko is one of those rare talents. His journey from an independent musician to a key player in the music business is a story of passion, resilience, and evolution.

Born and raised in Lagos as the youngest of four, Akachi’s love for music started during family road trips, where his parents played classics that shaped his musical taste. But it was his older brother who had the biggest influence, introducing him to Craig David, Kanye West, and popular boy bands of that era. This early exposure to R&B, Hip-hop, and Pop fueled his curiosity, leading him to explore different genres and refine his own sound.

Despite studying science, his heart was always with music. His time at Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja was a turning point, as he immersed himself in literature to sharpen his writing and imagination. During his university years at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he actively recorded music and performed, surrounded by a community of like-minded creatives who encouraged his growth.

In 2016, he released his first official single, Sauce. As an independent artist, he promoted his music, performed live, and built a fanbase, making valuable industry connections along the way. His persistence paid off in 2021 when he joined Mavin Records as an A&R, marking the beginning of his journey as a music business professional. The driving force behind it all was his pure, unfiltered love for music.

Having been in the industry since 2010, Akachi has witnessed its transformation firsthand—from physical distribution in Alaba to the blog era, streaming dominance, and the global rise of Afrobeats. His ability to adapt has been crucial to his longevity. He understands that staying relevant requires growth, and he embraces every new era with fresh ideas and energy.

His development has been shaped by constant learning. While he didn’t have formal mentors as an artist, he studied musicians he admired and absorbed knowledge from collaborators. Producers like Zimbocrix, Ditweni, and Sevn played major roles in shaping his sound, while his business acumen has been influenced by industry leaders like Don Jazzy and Tega Mavin.

For Akachi, standing out in an oversaturated industry is about embracing individuality while staying in tune with the times. He has also come to terms with the fact that recognition doesn’t always come instantly. Success in music is a marathon, not a sprint.

One of his most defining career moments was performing at Star Trek, a major stadium tour, in 2014 and 2015. Traveling from city to city on his own funds to audition and perform built his resilience and confidence as an artist. The love from the crowd and the thrill of the stage were unforgettable experiences that strengthened his artistry.

Looking ahead, Akachi envisions himself as one of Nigeria’s greatest artist-executives. In the next 5 to 10 years, he sees himself running his own music company, investing in emerging talent, and making a lasting impact on the industry. He also intends to continue making music on his own terms. His goal as an artist is to make Nigerian and African hip-hop cool again, merging it seamlessly with Afrobeats to inspire the next generation. As an executive, he wants to play a crucial role in the development of superstars, including producers, by creating new pathways for them beyond just waiting for placements.

Akachi Igboko’s story is not just about personal success—it’s a reflection of how Nigerian music has evolved and how artists can carve out their own futures. His journey proves that with adaptability, persistence, and vision, it’s possible to navigate the ever-changing music industry and leave a lasting legacy.
