Baddo and Alaga – Brothers in Rhymes, Ruling the Streets

A TALE OF TWO KINGS

HipHop and rivalry (beef) are like siamese twins – call it a toxic relationship between two lovers who really can’t do without one another, but are also archenemies. Think of the biggest rappers in any country or culture – do they have beef? Yes. Biggie and 2Pac, 50 Cent and Diddy, Nas and Jay Z, and in recent times, Kendrick and Drake, MI and Vector. Name them.

Oh, that was deliberate. No mention of Olamide and Reminisce – and that is because it has never happened. Friendship, brotherhood and legendary collaborations that have spanned over a decade, without hiccups and hassles. From their humble beginnings to their legendary status, a journey that has been marked by friendship, mutual respect, and a shared passion for bars!

“The Government” released in 2013, off Reminisce’s sophomore album marked the beginning of their collaborative efforts, then in 2015, they teamed up with Phyno and the trio created one of the greatest rap songs out of Nigeria, Local Rappers. They have since then made hits like Industreet Cypher, Hustle Loyalty Respect and more, and recently sealing their individual marks as the ‘KING OF THE STREET‘’ with ‘Orin’ off Reminisce latest album ASTG Vol 1

Beyond individual success, these legends have played a vital role in the introduction of new acts into the industry, with Olamide actively nurturing talents, like Fireboy and Asake, having been responsible for the emergence of artists like Lil Kesh and Adekunle Gold amongst many others, while Reminisce has introduced indigenous rap sensation Oladips, Sojay and others. Their individual and joint support solidifies their legacy not just as music icons, but as industry leaders who believe in fostering collective growth within the Nigerian music scene.

Beyond the studio, their connection runs deep. As Reminisce stated on the Zero Conditions podcast, “A lot of people wanted competition between us, but he’s a smart kid.” He also mentioned that Olamide was the biggest nag for the release of his latest album “ATSG“. Reminisce went on to describe how Olamide introduced him to the late Mohbad, even bringing him to his house at 1am. This late-night introduction eventually led to their viral Tiktok hit “Shina Peters”.

The collaborative success of Baddo and Alaga has become a blueprint for aspiring street artists in the Nigerian music scene, pushed the boundaries of Nigerian hip-hop, and gained global recognition for the genre.

In a genre known for its competitiveness and brutal rivalries, their friendship is a refreshing reminder of the power of unity and collaboration. One can say their professional bond is fueled by a strong sense of mutual respect and admiration.
