Like many aspiring musicians who dream of performing on big stages from an early age, Brumeh “Brum3h” Oghenekaro’s musical journey began in the humble setting of his church’s children’s choir. We journey through the Abuja-born singer’s ascent to the top on this week’s Artist Focus!
A shy and introverted child, the first of five, Brum3h found solace in expressing his emotions through pen and paper rather than verbally sharing his feelings with others.
His path to the music industry took an unexpected turn during his first year of University of Ilorin, when his friends convinced him to audition for the now-defunct MTN Project Fame reality talent show.
The Physics graduate faced two consecutive rejections. However, Brum3h remained undeterred and chose to focus on pursuing his career as a recording artist. He met the producer-turned-friend, Golddrummachine, and together they formed the musical duo “To Name A Few,” creating a unique genre they dubbed “Alternate Soul.” In 2016 and 2017, they produced soulful songs like “Stay Over” and “Based.”
In 2017, Brum3h released his first solo single, “White Collar Man,” during his final year at the university. The song captured the well-known struggle of young Nigerians facing societal pressures. After completing his studies, he took a hiatus to hone his songwriting and production skills.
Brum3h remained relatively quiet until the latter part of 2018 when he made a strong comeback with the single “Prayer for You.”
From that point, Brum3h’s career took off as he began performing at various major events in and around Abuja, sharing the stage with renowned acts like M.I Abaga, Davido, Wizkid, and Tems, etc.
Meanwhile, he focused on creating his debut EP, which was introduced alongside first single, “All My Life.” Two months later, he unveiled ‘The Big Blue,’ a remarkable 7-track project that firmly established him as a talented artist within Abuja’s vibrant entertainment scene.
‘The Big Blue’ received extensive radio airplay, and Brum3h performed songs from the project at prestigious events such as the Abuja Festival of Lights, Wizkid Live in Abuja, and Davido Live “WHOAREYOU.”
In 2021, Brum3h delighted his fans with “Criminal,” a mid-tempo afro-fusion track that gained widespread popularity and dominated the airwaves since its release. His success on the music stage allowed him to share platforms with other notable artists like Wurld, Adekunle Gold, Burna Boy, and Asa.
Brum3h draws inspiration from diverse artists, including Frank Ocean, Mali Music, Asa, Coldplay, Tay Iwar, and Daughtry. He views music as a form of therapy and expression, providing him with the means to find resolution amidst life’s challenges.
As he continues to captivate audiences with his soulful melodies and emotionally resonant lyrics, Brum3h is undoubtedly destined for even greater heights in the Nigerian music industry. His artistic authenticity and dedication to his craft set him apart, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of music lovers within Nigeria and beyond.
