Miji – Discovering What’s Behind the Covers

Some voices make you stop scrolling. Nigerian singer-songwriter Miji (Olamiji Kaska) has spent years lending hers to other people’s songs, singing covers so intimate they made strangers put their phones down and just listen. With “Bubble” she finally turns that same honesty toward herself.

Built on melancholic strings and restrained percussion, Bubble is a mid-tempo Afrofusion record that lives in the space between desire and hesitation, the feeling of wanting more from your life while being the very person standing in your own way. It is a conversation with the self, the version of you that knows exactly what it wants, can picture it clearly, and keeps finding reasons to wait one more day before reaching for it.

“You’ve heard me sing everyone else’s feelings,” Miji says. “Bubble is what mine sounds like.”

Born and raised in Lagos, Miji started posting covers in 2019 partly to cope with slipping grades, partly because she had always known she could sing but never quite believed anyone would care. She once sang Beyoncé’s “Listen” to convince her parents she had what it took to pursue music.

“From then on, they just left me alone,” she recalls. That quiet determination has carried her ever since through bedroom-lit videos and unpolished, direct-to-camera honesty that has earned her 232,000 followers and 5.1 million likes on TikTok alone.

But the imposter syndrome never fully left. It just found a new song to live in. Bubble does not introduce a new side of Miji. It reveals the one her audience already knows; self doubt, hesitation, and the invisible barriers we build to protect ourselves from disappointment.

This is not a sad song. It is a hopeful one and a reminder that the walls we build for protection can slowly become cages, and that sometimes the person we need most in our corner is ourselves.

Bubble is the sound of what happens when the world goes quiet, and the only voice left to answer is your own.

“Our voices matter. We just have to be brave enough to use them for ourselves too,” — Miji
