The conflict began when Seun Kuti, son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, announced his intention to engage Wizkid’s fanbase, known as Wizkid FC, in a seven-day social media campaign. Kuti’s grievance centered on comparisons some fans have drawn between Wizkid and his father, Fela Kuti, with some suggesting Wizkid represents the next generation of Fela’s musical legacy.
Over nearly a week, Kuti directed various criticisms at the Grammy-winning artist, challenging the comparisons made by fans. By the sixth day of his campaign, Kuti shifted tactics, noting that Wizkid had remained silent throughout the ordeal and had not defended his fanbase. The situation escalated yesterday when a Wizkid fan with the Instagram handle @captainririview posted a video response to Seun Kuti. Wizkid then broke his silence by reposting the video and making his own statements on the platform.
In a pointed Instagram story, Wizkid wrote: “I big pass your papa, Wetin u one do?” which translates to “I’m bigger than your father, what will you do?” The provocative statement directly challenged Kuti’s legacy and prompted an immediate response from Seun Kuti via his own Instagram story.
