A Knight of the Slums, Championing Change with Chess – TUNDE ONAKOYA

Tunde Onakoya’s story is one that transcends the checkerboard, a testament to the transformative power of chess and the spirit of a man determined to uplift his community. Born in 1994, his early life was etched against the backdrop of a Lagos slum, where opportunities were scarce and dreams often remained just that – dreams. It was within the confines of a local barber shop, amidst the buzz of clippers and chatter, that Onakoya stumbled upon the game of chess. The strategic depths, the intellectual challenge, the sheer elegance of it all captivated him.

With a degree in computer science from Yaba College of Technology, despite facing immense financial constraints and societal limitations, Onakoya’s passion for chess burned bright. With relentless practice and an unyielding spirit, he honed his skills, eventually rising to become the 13th-ranked chess player in Nigeria. This achievement, however, was just the beginning for Onakoya. He saw a greater purpose for his talent, a way to leverage his love and passion for chess to uplift those, who like him, experienced hardship as children.

In 2018, fueled by this vision, Onakoya founded Chess in Slums Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to bringing the magic of chess to underprivileged children. More than just teaching the game, the organisation became a ray of light, offering literacy training, mentoring, and scholarships, providing a path out of poverty into a brighter future.

Onakoya’s dedication to his cause reached new heights in 2024. In a remarkable display of willpower, he embarked on a 60-hour chess marathon in New York City, shattering the Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon. This remarkable act of self-sacrifice, supported by influential figures like former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and celebrities like Davido and Adekunle Gold, aimed to raise $1 million for children’s education in Africa. The world watched in awe as this young man from the slums of Lagos pushed his physical and mental limits, demonstrating the boundless potential that lies within every child, regardless of their circumstances.

Today, Chess in Slums Africa stands as a living testament to Onakoya’s relentless dedication. The organisation has impacted the lives of hundreds of children, securing lifelong scholarships, and continues to expand reach, offering hope and opportunity where it is needed most. Onakoya’s story serves as a powerful reminder that one person with a vision and a burning passion can truly make a difference. He is not just a chess master, he is a knight of the slums, a champion for change, and a man who did great things from small places.
