While some of us are just trying to get through the last 75 days of January, some are happy we are back to two genders, others are busy planning Valentine’s Day surprises, and a different group altogether is preparing to head to the kits, Kano — or other states — for NYSC orientation camp.
For those embarking on the journey to “serve your fatherland,” the NYSC camp experience is a unique one filled with memories, challenges, and plenty of laugh. This article contains a rundown of the random things you’re bound to encounter, and some survival tips:
Feeding:

When it comes to food, there are two types of people in camp:
1.The Ticket Hunters: These individuals are always on the hunt for meal tickets, whether it’s theirs or yours. They never miss a meal
2. The Mami Market Loyalists: These are the ones who avoid camp food like the plague and prefer to spend their money at Mami Market for tastier meals.
Relationships:
Handle with Caution
If you’re in a stable relationship outside camp, it’s probably not worth risking it for a camp fling. Let’s be honest: what are the chances of finding true love in just three weeks? For many, it’s simply a “genitalia meet-and-greet” situation, with breakups often happening a month or two after leaving camp.
Don’t SIMP:
Speaking of relationships, never “simp” for anyone. NYSC camp is a melting pot of personalities, and you’ll always find someone who genuinely likes you. Don’t waste your energy chasing someone who’s clearly not interested.
Alcohol:
After a long day of drills, boring SAED lectures, and parade, some corpers turn to their trusty companions: Bullet, palm wine, Smirnoff, or the classic “green bottle” (you know the one). A drink a day keeps the stress at bay.
Footwear:
Here’s a pro tip: buy an oversized white plastic shoe for your parade drills. It may not be stylish, but it’ll save your toes from serious pain and discomfort. Take it from someone who learned the hard way
Guide:
One important rule in camp: avoid unnecessary billing. Camp is full of opportunists who will try to milk you dry.
Also, guard your belongings fiercely — they’ll steal anything, from your phone to your underwear. Be vigilant and keep your valuables safe.
